Tarantino finds editor and DP for Django Unchained

Quentin Tarantino, as did friends, family and colleagues, suffered a great loss with the passing away of Sally Menke. She had been more than his editor on all his movies, she had been his right hand, and many wondered who would be able to succeed her in this role as the editor. Judging from IMDB and New York Times listings, Quentin might have found this successor in Fred Raskin (imdb), who had previously worked as assistant editor on the Kill Bill movies (and the Fast&Furious movies) and will be the editor on Django Unchained. Agency documents  also illustrate that Robert Richardson is back as director of photography on Django Unchained. This is welcome news to the fan world, which as long wondered who would fill these previously unclear gaps in the crew roster for the movie, which is gearing up to start shooting soon.

Robert Richardson

The film’s impressive ensemble cast has the internet abuzz already, and even though we lack confirmation on a number of actors and actresses, word around the campfire is already that this flick might be a gamechanger – even for QT, who is no stranger to ensemble movies, in fact that is his middle name (next to Jerome). Some casting choices we are still wrapping our heads around such as Sacha Baron Cohen (but then again he is currently co-starring in a Martin Scorsese movie, in 3D nonetheless) who might have replaced Jonah Hill who had to turn down a role, and some choices may not yield success (such as that of Michael K. Williams, who will most likely drop out due to scheduling conflicts with Boardwalk Empire, which is slowly gaining speed again in its second season). At least most of the main characters are in the dry now, with Jamie Foxx starring as Django, and Kerry Washington playing the title character’s love, Broomhilda.

The rest of the cast is rather colorful. We are slowly compiling our overview at this link in The Archives (the heart of this website), and adding character profiles for all Django Unchained characters as well. There seems to be a few people cast already for characters that are unknown to readers of the script that leaked several months back, an indicator for plenty of rewrites that have already occured at this point, which is customary for Q’s creative process. We’ll keep you posted, as always make sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ to join the debate, and check out our community message boards, our rumor control war room.
