Western Unchained – Tarantino’s Spaghetti Western favorites

Quentin Tarantino has opened the eyes of many, especially among the younger generation, to a world of cinema that has otherwise not received the public attention it should have. Foreign films, old kung fu movies, European classics, Spaghetti Westerns, Filipino low-budget action movies, classic drive-in flicks of the 60s and 70s, you name it. I personally think it is (among many things) a great achievement that through his movies, he has revived so much classic and genre cinema and in doing so injected some much-needed adrenalin into the home video market for these movies. All the classic movies that have been released about since Kill Bill, all the Grindhouse classics now available on DVD since 2007, all the Spaghetti Westerns available today, even on BluRay. Much that you can credit to the rekindled attention these cinematic worlds are getting, in part because through his work, he is building them an altar, and people, young and old, are getting curious and start rediscovering all this great cinema.

Germany-based publisher Koch Media, one of the world’s great supporters of genre cinema, is releasing a series of spaghetti westerns this coming January in German-speaking countries, to coincide with the European theatrical release of Django Unchained . The “Western Unchained” collection (some of it on BluRay) is themed to Tarantino’s new movie and consists solely of spaghetti westerns that are either in Quentin’s top 20 list of favorite spaghetti westerns, or were part of the lineup of spaghetti westerns he screened at the Venice Film Festival in 2007.
