Templates are pages with content that can be automatically inserted into other pages by using just their title. For example, there might be a page X that holds a picture and a text. On a page Y, you include the template X and when you open page Y, you will see... the picture and the text. Sounds complicated? Let me illustrate and then list templates that are already in use here and what they are used for....
