WWW
« on: August 02, 2003, 03:10:07 pm »

Hello dear member. This is the new F.A.Q. topic. Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers!) is what you'll find here. Don't worry, questions like those get asked a thousand times. Just read through and see if you find an answer to something that you think might help you.

This topic will be extended. You are welcome to post questions in here, they will be added to the faq itself, which will be the post after this one.

Please also consider the HELP section that you also find in the forum's menu.

"That website is fuckin' killer" - Q. Tarantino

Q: After I log in, and click something, I am logged out. Why can't I stay logged-in? Or after I refresh or click a link I get logged out.
A: This is a very common problem. It is caused by cookies. Cookies are little files stored on your computer who tell the website you've logged in. You have to ENABLE or ACTIVATE or ALLOW cookies for our website (www.tarantino.info) in your browser's settings

For Internet Explorer 6:
Go to your Internet Options (or Internet Explorer settings whatever); click "privacy". Two things to do:
1. click "advanced..." and click "override automatic cookie handling...".click "edit.." and enter "http://forum.tarantino.info", and "http://www.tarantino.info"  (without the "s)and click "allow" for each of them. After you did that for each of the three urls, you can go back and close the settings. Restart your internet explorer. It should work now.

Basically: ENABLE COOKIES!
For all other browsers (Opera, Mozilla, Safari):
Check out your browser settings and enable cookies! Detailed solutions coming soon.

Q: I have a problem not listed here, how can I get help?
A: Email us, we will immediately take care of it. Email : Use the contact page HERE - And dont worry, there hasnt been a problem we couldn't solve

Q: How do I get quotes, pictures and signatures?
A: You log in, and click "profile" at the top of the forum, then, under "forum profile information" you can add pictures, quotes, gender, adresses and much more. "account related settings" lets you change your password and other account stuff

Q: how do u post a link to an old thread while u are in another thread?
A: The best thing is you open 2 or more windows or tabs (tabs are supported by Mozilla, Firefox or Opera), in one you have your post, and in the other the topic you need, you then just copy and paste the URL (adress) of the topic into your post.
Alternative: You can right click on any thread/link and select the "Copy Shortcut" option. That should copy the whole address.

Q: Any way I can get images, videos or audio uploaded from my computer to here?
A: Yes you can. If you have a high enough rank, you can attach a limited file-size ammount of files to your posts, you can do that by clickin on "additional options" below your post form.

Q: Do you know when the pictures are gonna be up on your site?
A: We are working on the site. The website will soon have a new design and structure. Once that is completed, the downloads and images section will be back online. Thanks for your patience

Q: Is there an option to read the messages that you have sent to others privately?
A: Yes. They are stored in your OUTBOX until you emty your outbox. Just enter your messages and click on outbox. Since the relaunch with this new forum, you have to click "store copy in my outbox" when you send a personal message to a member

Q: I used to have a rank with 3 stars, and now I'm lower one with 2 stars? Why is that?
A: Ranks and Stars are based upon number of posts. Either some of yours got deleted and thus you drop into a lower rank or I modfied the number of posts needed for a rank. I occasionally change those settings to reflect the number of members

Q: I have problems viewing the website. Things look out-of-place, too big or shifted
A: Check it you have the LATEST version of your Browser software. Popular browsers are Internet Explorer (currently version 6 plus Service Pack 2), Mozilla (currently version 1.7.2), Firefox (currently version 0.9.3) and Opera (version 7.45).  Aol 10 or Safari are also popular. In windows, use windows update to get the latest versions. Other websites are www.mozilla.org, www.opera.com. We recommend Opera or Firefox, they are the most secure and the fastest. The reason why your site looks out of place is probably because there are errors in displaying it, which can be solved by using the latest software.

Q: What are the Board rules and where can I read them?
A: The link is displayed when you register at the forum. You can read them at www.tarantino.info/community/boardrules.htm - they will soon be integrated into the forum for easier access. Please stick to those rules, they are meant to obtain order in here.

Q: How can I put images into my signature or a post?
A: You can use the image icon above the smileys, they will insert 2 tags, they look like this
Quote
[ img ] and [ / img ]
(without the empty spaces). In between, you put the adress (with the http://) to the image you want to insert. In the signature you have to type those 2 tags yourself

Q: How do I become moderator?
A: If you are a long-time member here, and have proven yourself as a very cooperative and helpful member, the administrator will approach you and ask you if you'd like to become one. Alternatively, you can ask the admin and he will decide.

Q: Can you explain to me the importance to open a topic in the right board. And above all how to find the right board...
A: In order to maintain the accessibilty and navigation and order of this website it is important that topics are being opened in the RIGHT sections (eg: a question about pulp fiction please in the pulp fiction section). There are topics for certain movies, for special topics and there are sub-boards. These "child boards" are boards within boards. Movie sections have sub boards for DVD and movie discussions, the movie corner has sub boards for general DVD and director discussions and so on.
PLEASE use the search function at the top of the website to look for things if you cant find them. You can always ask the admin, moderators or veteran members to help you out

Q: How do I quote people?

A: You chose the post of a member you want to quote and there is a little "Quote" button. Click it and you will be directed to making a post. The users post is wrapped in
Quote
[ quote ] and [ / quote ]
tags, you can edit this in order to only quote parts of it. Below or above, you can add your message text, you can split quotes up, using these quote tags, be sure to wrap text you want to quote INSIDE the tags.
If you want to answer to a specific member you can just start a new post and write something like "@John: yes you are right"

Q: What is the "report to the moderator" button?
A: This button serves as an alarm button. If you think a post is offensive or violates the board rules or contains things that you think the moderator should take a look at, click it and a moderator will be notified.

Q: Why are only small signatures allowed?

A: In order to save space and make surfing easy, we dont allow very large signatures. Also, many people only have slow internet connections and it would be hard to surf for them with lots of pictures and stuff

Q: Why not large pictures in posts?

A: Pictures are limited to 400 by 500 pixels for the same reasons as above

Q: How should I call a topic? Are there tips on how to formulate a good title?
A: Yes. Topic names should be self-explaining. A topic with "i have a question" or "this is great" in the title doesnt make sense. Try to tell members what your topic is about. For example call your topic "A question about Tarantino's haircut". The title should explain the topic, so that people know what it's about before opening it. Please consider that you should check if your problem has maybe already been dealt with and that outside the movie sections some movies or discussions probably already have ONE designated topic

Q: What is spam?
A: Spamming is when somebody posts a large amount of useles topics or posts in a short time. We like to uphold the quality of this website, therefore, spamming (i.e. posting random trash and nonsense) is considered a violation of board rules. We hope that you understand that lots of garbage makes it hard to find information. Also, please use the "edit/modify" button to correct a post you made, dont just post yet another one below it. Thats a waste of space and makes reading harder

Q: What do you mean by modify or editing a post?
A: You can edit a post you made up to 10 minutes after you submitted it to  add information to it or correct mistakes. Just click the button at the top right corner of a post of yours.

Q: How can I link to a special post, not just a topic?
A: Right click on the title of a post (or the little icon to the left of it) and "save link location" (might sound different depending on your browser). That link you can paste wherever you want.
-example for this post: "http://www.tarantino.info/forum/index.php?topic=417.msg53123#msg53123"

"That website is fuckin' killer" - Q. Tarantino

WWW
« Reply #3 on: September 07, 2004, 01:55:24 pm »

Q: How do I search for information or topics in here?
A: There is a search function at the top left corner of the website. You can enter keywoards to find information. You can also click on "advanced search" to search only in certain topics or refine your search by certain criterias. You can use this like you use a search engine like for example Google

Q: Why does the search feature show different results depening on where I am currently?
A: The quicksearch bar searches only the section you're in right now, so a search while being at the front page delivers more results than one in a topic. if you want to narror your search use the advanced search method

Q: What's in the "Help" Link?
A: This page shows you some fundamental functions of this board. You should absolutely read this if you have never used a message board like this one

Q: How do I get back to the Quentin Tarantino Archives?
A: Just type www.tarantino.info into your adress bar of your browser and you're back at the main page. or click on the button in the new navigation bar at the top

Q: What are those statistics at the bottom of the main page index for?
A: They show some information about the forum. You can easily access the 10 latest posts on the page, check who the latest member is, what time it is, who is online and those kinds of things.

Q: How do I post a link?
A: Just write it into your post, the forum will automatically make a hyperlink out of it people can click on. alternatively you can use the button to insert one

Q: What do I have to do to get an email when somebody replies to a topic I like a lot?
A: You have to click "notify of replies" in the "additional options" when you post something. You can always enter a topic and click the notify button. you can manage all your topic subscriptions in your profile. You can always unsubscribe.

Q: Why can I not post in some topics?
A: Sometimes topics are closed, then you see a little padlock to the left. That means the topic has been closed for some reason. It could be that some topics are only accessible by a special group of members, for example the staff

Q: Is it possible to have several avatars, to change it frequently, and take it again...I had Marilyn apparition just before, I've touched to sacred. Is it free pictures ? I don't know because I'm not used to take avatars
Answer: At this point you can only select one avatar at a time. We CURRENTLY do not support uploading of avatars either. But if you have a bunch of cool avatars, I'd be happy to include them in our range of choices.

Q: Firefox ? more useful than Internet Explorer?
Answer: Definitely absolutely. Firefox is faster, easier to handle, more standard-complient (IE hardly recognizes web standards at all), Firefox has tabbed browsing and most importantly: it is much much more secure. IE an absolutely risky program. If you like more features, your choice should be Opera instead of Firefox. You can use both, too.

Q: When I last saw the stars I have got (which was probably a few weeks ago) I had 5 and howcome I have 3 now?? Does that mean you have changed the ranking system? If so, so then that means you decided to keep the original rank names and not change them like what we were discussing in that other thread ages ago?

A. you need 1800 posts for 5 stars. could be that i deleted some topics that you posted a lot, could be that i elevated it from 1600 to 1800 to reflect the current status quo of the forum. I sometimes change the ranking system to reflect the reality of this forum.
What we discussed ages ago did unfortunately not produce a final decision. suggestions are still welcome

Q: Why is member XY moderated/warned? what is that supposed to be?

A: we have a new visual warnings mod that lets the moderators team (currently testing phase) warn somebody, moderate somebody's posts, mute somebody or ban somebody. i am currently testing this. Users get warned/moderated if they violate board rules. There are several levels of warnings, from a mere warning to a ban.

Q: Why do the people in the "who's online" list have different colors?

A: The members who are online have some different colors. Moderators are GREEN, Administrators are RED, lurkers and inactive users are YELLOW and normal users are BLACK.

Q: I want to post a picture in the "pics of us" section, but I don't have any webspace. Does tarantino.info have a group area to host pictures, or anything similar?

A: When you write your post, take a look on the left site. There are the words: ADDITIONAL OPTIONS. Just click on it and you can put up an attachment. The allowance to post attachments depends on your rank.

Allowed file types: txt, jpg, gif, pdf, mpg, png
Maximum attachment size allowed: 100 KB, per post: 4

Where do I look if I am searching for something that might've been asked before?

A: There are several FAQ topics in the specific boards. Or take a look HERE, this is a list of important FAQ topics

Q: What are moderators?

A: Moderators are fellow members and friends who take some extra duties here like taking care of special boards, cleaning up or helping people. If you need anything, ask them.

Q: Can I upload my own avatar?

A: Now yes!

Q: At the bottom of the page there is an explanation for two symbols, one for new posts, one for no new posts, but what about that symbol that looksl ike in between?

A: There's a colored symbol that signifies new posts in a board, one that is slightly shaded means new posts in a child board only, and the black/white one means no new posts at all.
