Inglourious Basterds (read 10 facts about the films here) winning big at the Academy Awards is still little over a week away (read here why it will win), but Monsieur Tarantino is making some space on his bookshelf for the little Oscar fella (even though in an interview he says he things Ms Bigelow should win the best director award), I’m very sure. Christoph Waltz has so many awards for his role as Hans Landa already, that he lets his daughter build little houses with it (see video on Letterman). But let me give you a rundown on QT news, I’ve been a bit sloppy lately on updates. I’m starting to think a micro-blog type news page here would be more fitting, but then again, maybe after the Oscars we can go a bit back to normal here at the Tarantino Archives and then I will have some time to beef up PISTOLERO (www.robert-rodriguez.info), our new sister project. So here we go. The Vancouver Sun has a piece up on what QT said on the Directors on Directing panel a few weeks back (read here). The Guardian talks about how Basterds (which also won the NME awards last week) freed Quentin, and that A SOUTHERN might be his next project (read here). Moviefone calls Basterds the Dark Horse at the awards (read here). Quentin was giving away Basterds posters for Haiti relief (read more here).

But that’s really not all, if you have a good hour to spend on YouTube, you can go Tarantino crazy:

BAFTA’s A Life in Pictures series (watch the video) on Quentin Tarantino, a must-see!

Here’s a video from the Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds Q&A at the Egyptian some time back, comes in 8 parts!

And here are the good, the bad and the ugly news

A great piece in the LA Times about QT talking about his influences, a must read.

A really nice piece on cinematographer Robert Richardson and his work (read here)

Have you ever wondered what it would look like if Quentin Tarantino directed the Super Bowl (which the Saints so glouriously won yesterday; for the record: The Who rocked the fucking house)? Probably not! But still, check out this video (link).

If you’re in Hollywood, always be on the look out for really nice stuff like this down at the Egyptian theater…

Iconoclastic filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, hot off earning Oscar nominations Tuesday for best director and original screenplay for “Inglourious Basterds,” will discuss his career with Variety critic Todd McCarthy on Monday at the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre screening of “Basterds,” which received eight Academy Award nominations overall, and his 1994 classic “Pulp Fiction.” www .egyptiantheatre.com. (source)

We’ve reported on the Festival before, and here’s another great face-to-face summit between Quentin and Kirk Douglas, as they were screening Posse (AICN link), article and pictures (Independent). There was also a Directors on Directing panel at the Santa Barbara film festival (Link) which also offers some really great material. Article and pictures are available (Independent), and on that note a short Kill Bill vs Avatar (link) bit.

But back to Basterds. There’s a bit in Variety where Tarantino explains Basterds (link, Variety). Have your remote handy? Christoph Waltz will be on Letterman tonight. LA Times has another piece on the guy who will win an Oscar (link). And lastly, a really great article: Anne Thompson and Jack Mathews square off about Tarantino’s body of work, a discussion you need to read (link).

That’s it for now. Tarantinolicious…. we’ll keep you posted, despite the time-consuming thing called life :)

We’re not sure where this rumor came from just now, but it’s all over the net and it sais Quentin wants Hellen Mirren (remember herr in Caligula?) to star in a movie of his. I have zero ideas what that might be (via MC). But on to more factual news. Inglourious Basterds took home two SAG (Screen Actor’s Guild) awards last night, one goes to – whoe else – Chris Waltz for outstanding supporting actor (video), and the other to the best ensemble cast! (via RAMA). Click here to watch the cast accept the award and George Clooney make some random dirty jokes about the Golden Girls. In entirely unrelated news, Quentin updated his list of favorites of 2009 (source), if you followed that. But what’s really sick, and I have no clue why one would buy that or who, there will be a line of collectible toy figures of the Basterds and they’re starting out with Aldo Raine (click here). These things look expensive :) And because it’s videoclip day, head over to the LA Times for the director’s roundtable where Quentin and his competitors for the Oscars spill their career defining moments (Click here). But what should really knock you off your socks is when Mr Tarantino was on Conan O’Brien last night (by the way what’s all this I’m with Coco on Facebook, I’m totally out of the loop it seems), and where he proposed a hilarious revenge story to him and then they go on strangling. Hilarious. Watch it right here.

Recently, I’ve come to realize that unless I post a tiny news entry about everything that comes into my inbox, I end up with posts like this one. But I can’t help it, a blog isn’t a Twitter feed. Check out this article where Tarantino talks about violence (article), this one where he wants to be like Howard Hawks (article), or this one where he talks about Vinnie Jones who is with Celebrity Big Brother (Link).

In other news, there’s a new soundtrack release (King of Blue records official website), click here to check it out on Amazon (pre-ordering or buying it with this link supports this website). It’s a compilation of Morricone tracks used by Quentin in three of his movies. Seems decent. Haven’t had a press copy to test it yet, however.

While I was reading a Basterds at Critics Choice piece (article), I realized I’m a bit late in processing the news, because whoah, the movie conquered three of those little awards already (via MTV)! Best original screenplay, best supporting actor and best ensemble to to the Inglourious Basterds! Big shout-out to QT and the Basterds crew, you folks are amazing! Go Oscars! :)

On the web, “Inglourious Basterds” also took home four awards: best actress, Melanie Laurent; supporting actor, Christoph Waltz; original screenplay, Quentin Tarantino; and cinematography, Robert Richardson.” (via THR)

Last but not least you should check out the Empire Online mini-piece on Kill Bill Volume 3 (article) and Damon Wise’s well-written report from London (article). The piece is an absolute must read, as Damon not only just sketches how QT’s appearance in London went down, but the article actually paints a super cool and swift stroke of Tarantino’s career. Here’s another article in that direction. Speaking of career, the Oscars are getting closer and the LA Times has another piece and interview, so head over there and check out Tarantino talking about Basterds (LA Times article). Basterds as a so-so period piece of course also lives through its look. There was a piece on the costume design before, but here’s another one (article). Wrapping it all up with a picture of QT and Lee Daniels (Link).

Can’t emphasize this enough: These days I’m fairly busy with real life, so to stay even more up-to-date on the QT-Planet, do follow us on Twitter. I tweet a lot more than I can write here every couple of days, so do that. And if you want to win THE MERCENARY on DVD, it’s QT’s 4th most favorite Spaghetti Western of all time, head over to our sister site the SWDB.

You’re still reading this? Check out this cool video with Eli Roth.

(Instructions on how to win a copy of the Inglourious Basterds screenplay on paperback at the end of this article.)
Inglourious Basterds is being talked up more and more as THE oscar contender (source and here), and the LA Times seems to be on a real campaign to convince the readers of that (here and here). My prediction is that the movie will win a few awards, I’m just not sure if it will be that of the best picture. I do think it’s the best picture of the year (even though I’ve hardly seen even a chunk of all the movies that have been released this year), but I’m not sure if it’s what the oscar jury would award the little fella to, and part of me wishes Quentin would get it for something even bigger, haha. But we’ll see. The Online Film Critic Society has Basterds leading with no less than 8 nominations (source). But there’s more…. “[Quentin] Tarantino will receive the Sonny Bono Visionary Award for being “one of the most gifted, iconoclastic filmmakers of his generation,” according to fest chairman Harold Matzner.” writes Variety about the Palm Springs Film Festival, more about the event here. And last but not least, QT will be awarded the Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Cinema, on February 18 in London (via NYT), Inglourious Basterds rocked in Phoenix (source), and there’s a really nice and short interview with Quentin, embedded below (via THR / Joblo.com)

So it’s almost christmas, you Inglourious Basterds out there, and this glourious year is coming to an end. I’ve been a bit slow in my news posting, so here’s another round-up of things that happened since the last one. This will be the last post before the new year probably, so make sure you follow us closely on Twitter (www.twitter.com/QTArchives) as I will update that more regularly than the Frontpage here. Also join our Community and check out our Facebook group. Nothing beats nice chats with fellow Tarantino fans on a merry christmas evening with your computer on your lap under the christmas tree, right?

Cool things first! Via our friend Rama I hear that our man Quentin Tarantino spoke to Vulture mag about what might be coming next. That’s pretty exciting stuff. He sais he already wrote about 40 pages of a Basterds sequel, but that something smaller would be first, and in a totally different genre. That gets me excited because that’s something I really would like to see.

Some time ago Quentin (who received the London film critics’ highest honor recently) presented the achievement award at the Academy’s Governor’s awards show to legendary filmmaker Roger Corman, and you can now see Quentin’s marvellous speech at their website oscars.org in two parts: One | Two

Not sure if I posted this already, but there are some clips form a director’s roundtable on this page, very interesting to watch: HERE and if you missed out on Monsieur Tarantino on Jay Leno’s show, click here to watch it on YouTube.

If you want to win the German translation of the Inglourious Basterds paperback screenplay, follow us on Twitter today, we’re giving away one copy (must be a resident of Germany or Austria to win)!

And if you’re looking for yet another manly christmas gift (a late one), Hell Ride is slowly conquering more DVD markets, so check it out.

Lastly, we want to point out that as a special christmas gift, we’re letting you know that in time for the new year, with a delay of about 3 years, we’ll be launching robert-rodriguez.info the internet’s yet only and premiere Robert Rodriguez news blog. Stay tuned! You can already follow on Twitter @RodriguezNews !

You got money or gift certificates for christmas? Our sister sites the SWDB and the GCDB have little shopping guides waiting for you: SWDB shopping list | Grindhouse shopping list

We’re working on filling our Basterds Bluray and DVD overview pages with all the information you need to decide which one to get, but feel free to send us emails if we’re missing information or a version/edition of the DVD or BluRay we haven’t listed. And check out the badass box that will be available in Germany this January, below:

The Weinstein Company rocked the Golden Globe Awards with no less than 12 nominations (Variety), four of them for Inglourious Basterds, including best movie, best director, best screenplay and best supporting actor (you know who). Additionally, the already mentioned 10 nominations at the Critic’s Choice awards (see Guardian), with best picture, best supporting Waltz, best ensemble, best director, best screenplay, best cinematography (Robert Richardson), best art direction, editing (Sally Menke) and costume design. And best action movie on top of that (full list)! And then it killed at the NY Online Critics Award, too, winning best supporting actor and breakthrough performance (Christoph Waltz again), best screenplay and best cinematography! Wow. That’s a Bingo!

Also last night marked the DVD/BluRay release party of Inglourious Basterds at the New Beverly Theater in Hollywood (article). And Quentin spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about what his favorite flicks of 2009 are (link).

As we’re deep into the Oscars season, speculation heats about about Inglourious Basterds‘ chances of taking home one or more of the shiny little golden oscar statues. The Academy has increased the number of nominees from 5 to 10, which makes things a little more complicated, and absent a blockbuster that would unanimously be considered “the thing” (think a movie along the lines of Forrest Gump, which snatched it from Pulp Fiction in ‘95, a well made family movie, drama and epic, something oscar jurors don’t have to think twice about), the race will be mightly close.

What seems to be a no-brainer is that Christoph Waltz will probably add an Oscar to his already impressive array of best supporting actor awards, also Germain of the Chronicle seems to think so, even though he doesn’t award Basterds a big shot at the main trophy. Just this weekend, Basterds picked up some more nominations (10!!) at the Critics Choise Awards (read here).

Oh and head over to MTV’s article here about Tarantino’s reaction to Basterds success and why there won’t be anything like an extended cut on DVD. Speaking of DVD, make sure you order your Basterds DVD/BluRay in time for christmas (click here for our last article on that).

That’s a bingo! Ladies and gents, the year is coming to an end faster than some poor Nazi that you would put in front of the Bear Jew. It’s December dear readers and as if Inglourious Basterds only came out yesterday, there’s tons of shit to check out. I’ll run through the goodies with you really quick to get to the main topic of today’s discussion, which is the release of that movie on home video at least in some countries.

First up, when Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino went to Japan, they went on some really crazy cooking show, and you can check out the whole thing on video. Quentin’s been on the show before, which you can also see. Click here to check it out.

According to MTV (read), Tarantino was offered to direct The Green Lantern (at a very early stage), but according to the interview, that came at the wrong point in his career, and declined.

The annual Emmy awards will be handed out on January 31st next year, and guess what’s nominated in the category of “Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media”? That’s right, the Inglourious Basterds soundtrack! Time to get it if you don’t own it yet!

Also on MTV, Quentin talked a bit about Kill Bill Volume 3 and that it might if at all be about a movie away and not be called that. So chill out everyone :) And on that note MTV has another article as well.

Inglourious Basterds will be screened at the New Beverly theater in LA soon, in a double bill with The Dirty Dozen, and cast and crew will attend! This limited event will be hard to get into, but try this place to win tickets.

Click here to read a piece by/with Sally Menke on her working relationship with Quentin in The Guardian.

I can’t believe people still rant on about the spelling in the Basterds script (read here), I mean get a life… move on. Watch the movie :)

Seems like Eli Roth has something interesting in the pipeline (click here)

Okay so shall we get down to business? There was a DVD release party this week in Hollywood (article) and many of you lucky readers probably already own the DVD or BluRay of Inglourious Basterds. It will be tough for us to give you a good overview of all the different editions available world wide (we’re trying here for DVD and here for BluRay, but we need your help, so email us with info), but depending on where you are, best bet is to get the Special Edition of some sort, and go for the heavily packaged version (check out the limited German one!) if you have more money at your disposal. It is already getting excellent reviews (e.g. here and here) and we’re trying to have at least one available for you to win sometimes the next one to two weeks. And we’ll have a review ready soon as well. It’s christmas time soon so go shopping-crazy using our Amazon links.

All available editions of Basterds on DVD (overview page)

All available editions of Basterds on BluRay (overview page)

Life keeps me busy, but here’s a little rundown in case you missed out on a few stories. We’ll also do a few cool things pretty soon that involve giving away some DVDs and all that, so make sure you check back daily. Also don’t forget to dive into our Archive or/and Community and exchange ideas with fans from all over the globe!

MTV has an interview with Quentin Tarantino looking back on this great year, with Basterds, American Idol and more. He also mentions that something Kill Bill will not be next. Read it here. Meanwhile, The Envelope thinks Basterds will win the Oscar. What do you think? comment below! Here is a story about what’s next for Christoph Waltz, who played Landa in Inglourious Basterds, the role that already got him the golden palm in Cannes. Click here for a little profile and interview at the awards insider. IFC.com has a nice article called “Bad boys grow up”, also including a part on Tarantino. Read it here. Oh and here’s a picture of QT at some GQ awards. I was wondering how long it took some news outlets to come up with a story about Roger Avary’s twittering from jail, but here’s one. And what would the internet be without the latest rumor of a forgotten celebrity claiming to be in a future Tarantino movie? Well it’s Johnny Hallyday’s turn to claim that Quentin is writing a part for him? True or (pulp) Fiction? Read here and here.

No end in sight, my friends, Basterds is going wild in Japan. Check out this article, Tarantino returns to grind up Nazis in the Japan Times and a 3-star review in the same paper. What’s even more interesting, is Quentin’s role in a Japanese commercial for the SoftBank cellular company (Examiner). Quentin plays Uncle Tara-Chan in what is actually a commercial-series called the “White Family”. Preview clips have already surfaced on the net and can be seen for example in this article at the Hollywood Reporter. Our least-favorite newspaper The Guardian of course had to negatively rant on about this.

Some more random stuff you need to check out: By the way, how cool is this “Say TWEET again!” tee shirt? And how cool is it that Tarantino will be present at the Academy’s Governors Awards where among other things an honorary Oscar will go to Roger Corman? And how cool is this story about Chris Waltz and Sally Menke? Sally being of course Quentin’s long-time editor, who got an award for her work recently (click here to read a great interview with her!). The beautiful and smart Melanie Laurent answers some questions in a nice interview you can read here. Inglourious Basterds, papers report, might not even get released in one of Tarantino’s favorite places, the Philippines, if an industry dispute there isn’t settled (source). That of course hasn’t stopped the movie from making over 300 million dollars worldwide now, and counting! That’s a bingo! And yes, we’ve heard those stories about a Basterds sequel/prequel, but unlike most outlets, we actually read the quotes and when there’s really nothing new to report, then there just isn’t. Did you know Quentin is a fan of Echo and the Bunnymen (yeah I had no idea that band existed, either), but check it out right here. And there’s a little piece on Tarantino and cars you shouldn’t miss.

UPDATE

Tarantino at the Governor’s awards (source)

Honoring Corman, Quentin Tarantino added, “is a dream come true. Only Roger would make ‘The Raven’ a comedy. Roger was the original maverick,” he said while showing clips of Corman’s films based on Edgar Allan Poe works.

and have you seen the great Inglourious Basterds comic book covers? Click here

To make this really quick, Inglourious Basterds will hit BluRay and DVD (as stated a few times already) before christmas (and after christmas in some countries). We have started compiling a list of all BluRay releases and a separate list of all DVD releases. Please note that these lists are still subject to change, as various Amazons correct the cover image and different version they get from the distributors. The movie will mostly be available in three versions, one being a regular disc edition on DVD with only a handful of extras, the other two being the two-disc DVD and two-disc BluRay editions, with all kinds of extras (you can see them in the lists), yet in some countries that simplicity is complicated by regular editions that are available in different packaging, or with postcards and steelbooks, etc. The choice is yours, you basterds!

On a different note, Quentin Tarantino received the Kirk Douglas award (via comingsoon.net) (via santa barbara independent) this past week in Santa Barbara (the links have pictures and more information), while Basterds opens in the Philippines on Nov 4 (via Manila bulletin) and opened at the top of the box office in South Africa (via). The trades are writing about the start of the Basterds Oscar campaign (via link) and Quentin Tarantino will in fact, according to industry insiders (via link) present one of the honorary Oscars! To round things up, there’s an interview with Lawrence Bender (link). That’s it for now, don’t forget our Basterds Crew Jacket giveaway on the Frontpage.

The third is about how many have tried to be Tarantino, which is a great companion piece to the link I posted a few days ago where an author talked about how Tarantino destroyed the cult film.

Inglourious Basterds in the meantime, you all know it’s announced on BluRay and DVD, continues to make money and the goodies don’t stop there. They’re everywhere. Headlines like “Get ready for Kill Bill Vol.3″ or “Tarantino confirms Vol.3″ etc. Why a I not running this story that way? Because it’s a non story. And I’ll tell you why. For one, Quentin Tarantino has given the exact same comments when asked about Volume 3 he has given years ago. So no change there. Second, it’s a slow-news phase, so blogs will jump on anything non-Basterds that sounds remotely like anything he might do next. Third, and most importantly, he has repeatedly said that if (!) he will do it, it will be a story 10 or 15 years after Volume 2, especially should he stick to that premise of little Nikki Green taking revenge. So why go all nuts over some awkward little interview that reveals nothing new and doesn’t confirm anything we haven’t heard already? I’m not against Volume 3, Kill Bill or getting excited about the next great thing Quentin will do, but blowing those non-stories out of proportion because nobody cares to watch/read those interviews closely and think about what’s been said over the last years, that’s lame. On this website, you’ll read about Volume 3 when there’s something new and exciting about it to report. Dismissed.

It just opened up in a number of new countries, too, so we ain’t seen nothin’ yet, as they say. Among other places, the movie opened in Spain at the San Sebastian film festival (link, link and link), and in October, Quentin will launch the movie in Mexico (AFP).

A particularly interesting launch is Israel, where Quentin and his gang o’ Basterds premiered the movie for the first time, a very special audience for this film. You can see videos of the press conference (article in hebrew, with pictures) here, and here’s a clip of the premiere (thanks to Ziv for the heads up). Reviews in Israel are not interely positive, but it will take a little until it’s time to conclude whether the movie was well received there. Tarantino repeatedly stated he was very excited to premiere the film there, as you can imagine. While the movie was surpassing the 200 million dollar threshold, not only is that a huge relief for the Weinstein company, it also puts Quentin back to a role he had taken before: the Weinstein’s secret weapon so to speak.

So we’re back with some Basterds news wrap-up business, because business is a-boomin’. It’s been a bit quiet lately, but we’ve got a whole bunch of links for you to make up for it. The making-of video to Nation’s Pride just being the tip of the iceberg (click here to watch). On that note, have you rated Basterds yet? If you’re an imdb registered member you can rate it, the movie’s currently at about 8.6/10 points! It’s also still doing well at the box office around the globe (cf. Box Office Mojo), with this weekends numbers still impressive. Inglourious Basterds – Tarantino’s most glorious movie? Send us your thoughts or post in our Community.

Here’s a quick and dirty rundown, we’ll try to bring some more exciting stuff soon. The Examiner has an interview with Castellari worth reading, and Screencrave has an interview with Quentin Tarantino. Vulture mag has an ironic conclusion of Quentin’s appearance on Charlie Rose. Variety has an interesting piece on the look and feel of Basterds. Then there’s someone who thinks he knows what needs to happen for QT to become an icon, and there’s a piece on the special effects of the movie. A good quick piece on war in modern memory (and violence), and here’s an interview with Eli Roth, who so funnily tries to immitate a German accent in the making of linked to above. Lastly there’s actually places where the movie is so controversial there have been bomb threats (read here)! So much for now, feel free to send in links and other things.

A second weekend in a row Inglourious Basterds kept on scalping. Especially on international box offices it did quite well. It entered at the top in many European markets and stayed there in others, raising it’s international total (Reuters) while pulling in another $20 million Stateside (BOM), you can keep track of some numbers at Box Office Mojo’s Basterds pages. But let me take a step back and look at some of the media coverage recently.

There was a small buzz on the net last week over a supposedly unused Basterds poster that looked a bit like an Indiana Jones artwork. Skyy Vodka has a nice little video on the LA premiere, with lots of interviews and pictures and stuff, worth checking out. If you missed Quentin on Charlie Rose, click here, it was quite an interesting session. And there’s already lots of award talk. Quentin will receive the Kirk Douglas award at the Santa Barbara film festival in honor of him having changed the direction of American cinema forever, as the release states. Clothes and apparel maker S.Oliver has teamed up with Studio Babelsberg, where the movie was filmed, and the original crew jackets are going to be available in limited number in their stores. We’ll try to give away a few later this month. The LA Times has a nice little piece on the scalping in the movie, with a picture. Quentin was on NPR’s Fresh Air, which you can check out online here. There’s a little analysis on how good Basterds must still do at the box office here. There’s a review arguing about an underlying message in Basterds, which I disagree with. Then there’s a piece on the marketing of the film, and finally a review in The Economist, and this wraps up my little run-down for now. Thanks for reading, join our Facebook pages, our Twitter feeds and our Community and spread the word.

In a very interesting article in the LA Times, which you should read, one passage was especially interesting to me, as you may know this website is based in Germany, where it says:

In a particularly surprising twist, however, there was much higher than usual demand to see the movie in English. Twenty-eight theaters in Germany, four times the typical number, showed the so-called “original version” that’s the same shown in the United States, indicating that audiences perhaps wanted to hear Tarantino’s celebrated dialogue in its original language or experience the movie, which features characters speaking German and French, from the perspective of its American protagonists. “Those original versions were massive,” Kosse said. “We were at the limit of breaking records with them.”

Updates: Basterds made 3.59 million pounds in the UK, topping the box office there as well (Reuters).

Update 2: A message from Germany! The movie is of course also topping the box office here, with €2.95 million (BPFilm)
