An Oscar for the Jew Hunter

What an evening. Hopes were high, excitement big. Inglourious Basterds was nominated for 8 Academy Awards, and each of them well deserved. The evening started out with no surprise neither: Christoph Waltz took home the golden statuette for his role as Col Hans Landa of the SS. A great speech. But the rest of the evening was a series of disappointments, when it turned out that Christoph’s would be the only Oscar the Basterds team would be taking home.

Update: Videos from the red carpet, article on Waltz, QT sued over Kill Bill.

Sidenotes: We’re not sure of what to make of those Chris Tucker rumors (link), and here are pictures of Quentin’s lovely company that we wrote about the other day. We don’t like to delve in personal things, as we’re not ET or something but this is worth clicking (link). Lastly, thanks to everyone for following us on Twitter, and please check out Pistolero these days for more updates on Robert Rodriguez’ ventures in film and elsewhere.

Mr. Tarrantino – Basterds was the best film of 2009. I remember my only thought during the credit roll…after watching it alone on DVD…was…wow…what an amazing and satisfying piece of work. How it fulfilled long standing fantasies and secret wishes. The tension created by Mr. Waltz…the theater scene when the death threat is announced…the money shot with the automatic weapon to the face. I will never forget those images.

Needless to say I was very surprised you did not get the winning Oscar nod for best original screenplay or best film. Very. In my opinion Basterds will achieve classic status before all the other 9. Compliments to you and your crew on delivering excellent entertainment. Looking forward to your next film.

BY FAR the best movie of 2009. At least for clever people who really likes every aspect of a movie. Based on iMDB reviews I can see that a lot of people went to see this movie expecting a brutal Saving Private Ryan. Or even complaining about having to read subtitles! CMON! I just can't imagine this movie dubbed, it would be horrible. Where all that outstanding jokes based on language would go.

I only kept thinking: “OMG! Brad Pitt + Tarantino, I have to see this”. In fact, I think this is truly Tarantino's masterpiece and one of the best movies ever created. I really like Pulp Fiction, but this one is just TOO MUCH FUN! Twisting the history + tension + top level comedy + violence. Perfect.

    ***SPOILER***
The theater scene will be in my memory forever. The best scene I've ever seen. Period.

I understand an anthology of “fresh” film criticism and analysis on IB is in the works, edited by film historian Robert Von Dassanowsky. No exact details yet but it looks like the film will get its post-Oscar respect!
