  • International Basterds trailer hits

    June 30th, 2009 - 1pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

IF YOU NEED HEROES, SEND IN THE BASTERDS! Woah, I am so happy now. I’ve been waiting for an international trailer of Inglourious Basterds to come out for a long time, most of all because I love trailers that show more names other than Brad Pitt’s, but also because I love watching different trailers tailored to different audiences. So below is the international English-language trailer (with Serbian subtitles for now) which I presume will be, or might end up as, the predominant European trailer. It is funnier, snappier, shows a bunch of new shots and angles and – more actor names. Funny shit, I guess this gives a more accurate representation of some of the film’s actual athmosphere. This might be my favorite trailer of the year!

UPDATE: Thanks to all of you who sent emails with proper links, so now you can enjoy the trailer, either below, or HERE on Dailymotion, HERE on Youtube, and HERE. Thanks to Harry, Avi, Dominic, and Paul – and thanks to Marius, also with a Tarantino introduction at the end of THIS Norse article here (THIS IS THE ENGLISH ONE, also has a QT intro). Thanks to Valentin of tarantinofiction.com for THIS LINK on the French MSN page! So now we got you covered. Just no HD link so far, anyone have one? And here, on BILD’s website, is the German dubbed trailer. Bild of course sucks, and so does dubbing, sounds like Chris Waltz did not get to keep his own voice.

MTV has a nice little blog post about Eli Roth, Inglourious Basterds and a few background tidbits, you should click HERE and read it. Oh and just to make sure, you should’ve read the head-honcho’s final words on all the Basterds rumors RIGHT HERE also. And yeah I mean Harvey Weinstein :)

    Inglourious Basterds theatrical trailer premiere

    June 24th, 2009 - 11am GMT, posted by Sebastian

If you missed our little update, the last video that hit was the TV spot, and now Fandango as announced premiered the theatrical trailer for Inglourious Basterds on their website. I don’t know what the deal is with their website, but the video wouldn’t play for me well. Click here to go there (HD version). I’m hoping for someone to put it up on YouTube. You can watch a low-res version right here.

Update: The trailer is finally on Youtube, you can watch an HDified version HERE.

Update 2: Here’s an extensive must-read interview with Harvey Weinstein about Basterds, how it came together, how it almost ended up as a TV show, and why the rumors about the studio forcing QT to cut the movie are bullshit. Read it.

Grindhouse to hit BluRay before Inglourious Basterds?

    June 23rd, 2009 - 4pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

While the majority of Tarantino fans are probably waiting for Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair to hit DVD shelves this August for synergy effects related to the theatrical release of Inglourious Basterds, it seems like that fortune is reserved for Grindhouse. Press releases seem to indicate, according to BD News, that Genius Products, the WeinsteinCo’s home video distribution arm, is set to release Grindhouse on a 2-disc BluRay set on August 11. No further information is known at this point, we’ll try to keep you posted.

New Two Minute Inglourious Basterds TV spot online

    June 22nd, 2009 - 7pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

Thanks to each and everyone of you who emailed us today about the Inglourious Basterds theatrical trailer hitting the net (Update: it’s not the theatrical trailer). I was of course divorced from my laptop otherwise you’d be reading this way sooner. So the time has finally arrived, here’s the new TV spot, feel free to set YouTube to auto-repeat. We STRONGLY suggest watching it in high-definition RIGHT HERE (embedding of that wasn’t working), a lower-res version below:

UPDATE: this is the official 2-Minute TV spot that aired on Spike TV, not the final theatrical trailer as widely reported, of course. The theatrical trailer will premiere later this week on Fandango.

First look at new Basterds footage

    June 21st, 2009 - 2pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

ET has done it again. Our least favorite tv show in the world scored another first look at Inglourious Basterds footage which might in the end be the theatrical trailer in some shape or form. Click below to check it out, or wait a week or so until a version hits that doesn’t have all the ET goo all over it :)

Thanks to Rama’s Screen for the heads up.

    New Inglourious Basterds posters

    June 17th, 2009 - 9pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

So here we go fellas, it continues…. Inglourious Basterds posters from Italy, Spain, France and the UK have hit the net and more are probably to come, click the poster below to get to our poster overview. It’s good to see Universal Pictures give the movie posters sort of a classic look, however personally I neither like the taglines nor the front-center photoshop cut-outs of the three characters… We hope to get higher quality images of those posters soon (we have hi-res of the Italian one for example), thanks to TarantinoSpain for the heads up…

Update: There’s also the new US poster (left), which is surely hanging around in a theater lobby close to you

    They called him Machete

    June 15th, 2009 - 11pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

If you hire Machete to kill the bad guy, make sure the bad guy isn’t you! Via our friends at Slashfilm and The Playlist, comes news that RobRod and his companero in the directing chair (Rodriguez will produce) will start production on the feature-length Machete in about 5 weeks. Turning the Grindhouse trailer into a full-fledged feature film has been in discussion for a long time now, and it’s great to see this one moving foward. Danny Trejo of course plays the titular character, an undercover agent or pro assassin who gets double crossed and turns on those who originally hired him, and thus venturing into an anti-corruption mini-campaign, involving… what else… machetes, hot chicks, lots of cool lines and… Cheech Marin.

    Wild cinema from down under

    June 13th, 2009 - 10am GMT, posted by Sebastian

The wild documentary about classic Australian (”ozploitation”  click here to read all about it) cinema, Not Quite Hollywood, will hit a few US theaters in a week or so. While it’s already out on DVD in some parts of the world, you definitely don’t wanna miss this, watch the red-band trailer below, with some words by Quentin:

Samm Levine is a Basterd – and so is Damo

    June 2nd, 2009 - 11pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

We’ve been a bit quiet lately, and yes while there was stuff out there that I could’ve easily written about, I was a bit busy with other things, which gave you lots of opportunity to dive into our Forums, read up on Spaghetti Westerns or discover the Deuce. Or do more important things. But if you rather have your dose of Inglourious Basterds on a daily basis, with some french dressing and curly fries, then maybe head over to the always worth-reading Paste Magazine for an interview with Samm Levine. And if you’re not sure what to make of all the reviews that came out of Cannes, head over to Empire to read a post-Cannes anti-rant review of the film by none other than The Wise (remember his 3-sentence review a few days back?), to put things into perspective.

One thing you might’ve come across is OWF’s “Tarantino Problem” story. Apparently my comment to that story didn’t get submitted correctly initially, so I just reposted it and it can be read right here.

Filmnerd enough to be a Basterd?

    May 30th, 2009 - 10pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

Between now and the theatrical release of Inglourious Basterds (click here) in August, you’ll have enough time to catch up on your Macaroni Combat education. That’s right, you heard me, Macaroni Combat, not Spaghetti Western. Well actually, you should probably dive in there as well, as Inglourious Basterds is a homage to both (and more). The reason I’m writing this is, that Severin Ent. in the US has just released two centerpiece movies by Enzo Castellari on BluRay (and DVD), which are direct influences on Inglourious Basterds. The one is of course the “original” 1977 Inglorious Bastards (click for more info), the other is Eagles Over London (click here for more info).  Aside from that, you can check out our growing Movie References Guide for Inglourious Basterds, which will bring you closer to a few movies that are key to acquiring some trivia/nerd knowledge about the movie. Enjoy reading.

    Awarded Basterds

    May 24th, 2009 - 8pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

Much hailed by the critics already, Christoph Waltz won the Golden Palm for best performance for an actor at the Cannes Film Festival today. His performance as the evil SS Colonel Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds stole the show, and the Palm goes to the – outside the German-speaking parts of Europe – previously rather unknown actor. The award underlines the consensus among reviewers, who no matter which verdict they gave the film, mostly agreed on this terrific performance.

“Above all I owe this to Hans Landa and his unique and inimitable creator, Quentin Tarantino. You gave me my vocation back,” Waltz said accepting the Palme D’Or.

    Cannes Exclusive: Inglourious Basterds mini-review

    May 24th, 2009 - 1pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

You really thought we wouldn’t find a way to present you with an exclusive review of Inglourious Basterds directly from the Cannes Film Festival? Think again, my friends. Despite all odds, we dispatched the danger-man of international film criticism to another noon screening of Tarantino’s film with the task of writing the review you haven’t read yet, so behold the words of the Wise:

“On second viewing, Ingourious Basterds really holds up; it’s a slick, thrilling wartime adventure that rations the violence and replaces it with Tarantino’s most masterful suspense yet. It’s not quite the men-on-a-mission movie people have been making in their heads for ten years, but it’s all the better for that: the mix of characters keeps the momentum going from set-piece to set-piece, and though all the players are uniformly excellent, Christoph Waltz truly steals the show as the evil SS genius Colonel Hans Landa. The score is outrageously beautiful too, and the script features some of QT’s best one-liners ever (my current favourite being, “Marcel – burn it down!”). I’m not sure it will win the Palme D’Or but it’s a damn good watch.” – Damon Wise

Basterds back to the editing room? (updated!)

    May 23rd, 2009 - 11am GMT, posted by Sebastian

(We’ve updated this article, see paragraph below). As we’ve reported yesterday, the version of Inglourious Basterds shown at the Cannes Film Festival was missing the Maggie Cheung character and ran at a total of about 2.30. Contractually, as Variety reports, he’s allowed to deliver a two hour and 48 minutes cut, so he has enough wiggle room to put things back into the movie. Variety sais he’s supposed to go back to the editing room with the movie to add a scene, yet no word about what sort of scene(s) that might be. It is not uncommon for directors to “abuse” Cannes as a testing ground for their movies. After all, most movies screened there arrive without having been test-screened prior to the premiere. Question is will the final theatrical version of Inglourious Basterds be even shorter, snappier (some critics say there was a lull towards the end) and quicker, or will it be longer, thus carrying more weight and giving it maybe more depth? We don’t know, but we’ll keep you posted! Thanks to Rama’s Screen for the heads up.

UPDATE: Contrary to what we’ve reported earlier, the running time information might or might not be bogus depending on which angle you take at this story. Anonymous sources tell us that QT had in fact cut about 6 minutes from his original cut after notes from the studio resulting in what was screened in Cannes. He still plans test screenings in US theaters to arrive at a real theatrical cut (the aforementioned common practise in the movie business). We also know what the major cuts were that made the 6 minute difference. Aside from the Madam Mimeux (played by Maggie Cheung) parts, the entire backstory of Eli Roth’s character, which takes place in Boston but was just on location in Germany on the same semi-outside soundstage as the theater exteriors, had to bite the dust. A third moment is a scene right before the already famous La Louisianne scene, which might be a strong contender for being edited back into the film, as it constitutes a key moment between the Aldo, Archie and Bridget characters. Stay tuned

Btw, at minute 4:15 you’ll find a previously unseen scene with Melanie Laurent and Daniel Bruehl at the IB highlight video on the festival site. Tomorrow night at 11pm ET MTV will also feature an exclusive look behind-the-scenes. Stay tuned.

Maggie Cheung is not a Basterd

    May 22nd, 2009 - 1pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

cheungSad news for all you Maggie Cheung admirers out there. As China Daily reports, her parts in Inglourious Basterds have been cut from the final film for length reasons. Apparently Maggie was okay with it, yet us fans are truly shocked of course. At least that will be something to look forward to on a DVD at some point maybe. She said “[QT] called me from Cannes to explain that my scenes had to be cut to ensure the film’s length. I really thought it was no big deal.” well what a sport she is. Cheung was supposed to play Madame Mimieux, the actual owner of the cinemateque that serves as the stage for a fireworks of revenge…

    Cannes – The Day After

    May 21st, 2009 - 12pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

What a night it must have been at the Inglourious Basterds premiere. Just to give you a few impressions, here’s a few things you can look at: a) Pictures from the premiere red carpet event, see Tarantino dance! b) Part 1 and 2 of the press conference (some pictures) c) another feature on the premiere with the red carpet arrivals and Quentin Tarantino’s crazy dance! Even though reviews so far were sort of mixed, we’ve hardly seen bad reviews aside from the usual haters, and I’d say from what I’ve read, a significant number of people loved the movie for what it is: Tarantino’s ultimate Spaghetti Western cum WW2 epic, with acting that dazzled even the haters. I have yet to see this ‘magnum opus’ however. Dive into our forums to discover more links to reviews and discuss with other fans. Please feel free to send us links to reviews and pictures and videos, we’ll try to include all material we can get our hands on for The Archives. Peace out, Basterds!

Update: Here’s a nice clip from AFP, and here’s the “I’m God” clip. And here’s the dance again:

Basterds clip from Cannes and more as the premiere is on the way

    May 20th, 2009 - 8pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

While I’m sitting here waiting for it to start raining, people in Cannes are probably half way through the first minutes of Inglourious Basterds already soaking up that good ol’ Morricone. But for you and me, there’s a new clip with an introduction by Quentin at Yahoo Movies (yeah that sucks I know, someone put it on Youtube or Vimeo please, in HD!) showing the rescure of Hugo Stiglitz from a Nazi jail. Also, if you wanna see an example for how not to do a professional interview (2 clips), go to the Today Show page and see someone interviewing Brad Pitt who better pray to keep her job. And then there’s a few videos on the Cannes page from the photo call this morning. Enjoy, you Basterds. And here’s pictures of the Cannes premiere at Yahoo. Update: Here’s a short summary of the press conference.

Three new clips and reviews of Inglourious Basterds

    May 20th, 2009 - 1pm GMT, posted by Sebastian

Cannes is happening, my fellow Tarantinoites (or Tarantinophiles, in LeMonde’s words). There are three new clips from the movie up at movieweb.com that give a better impression of a) Brad’s accent and personality b) Diane Kruger’s hot french accent, c) the evil that is personified in Landa and d) the use of Morricone’s L’Arena in Inglourious Basterds. Watch the three clips right here.

Also, the first two screenings have happened (the big premiere is tonight at 8pm Cannes time, parties were on the way yesterday), and here are a few first impressions from some lucky Basterds who’ve seen the film:

    • Our friends at Obsessedwithfilm have quite a short review up, it sais: “..Absolute F**CKING quality!…. It gets a bit silly for ten minutes at the end and the brit characters are a bit shit” but since the screening was just over, they’ll update to a full review soon, so check this link again later.
    • Total Film has two “first impressions” up, one calls the film “Quentin’s best film since Jackie Brown. It might even be his best film since Pulp Fiction..” and “QT’s magpie eye has never been sharper, swooping down on Italian cinema and plucking the very best shots, framing and music to create a deserving homage to the spaghetti westerns of my youth” read the whole review here. And their second one is the anti-review, saying “much of Basterds felt flat, with a schizophrenic spaghetti western style that blasts Ennio Morricone at the start and then David Bowie later on.” and sais that “the applause at the end was muted at best”, read this rather sceptical one here.
    • Thanks to our great friends at Slashfilm, the following buzz can also be summed up: A rather negative video review from THR (click) and more:
    • Empire magazine calls it “rather brilliant. Every bit as idiosyncratic as the spelling of its title, it’s a wonderfully-acted movie that subverts expectation at every turn” (read)
    • 411 calls it “most ambitious American movie at this years Cannes Film Festival and definitely the best in competition” (read)
    • And in the Twitter universe it’s being called “friggin awesome” (FirstShowing), Tarantino’s best film since Pulp Fiction (BBC) and “ the grindhouse version of “Valkyrie””(Gregg Kilday)

We’ll keep you posted as good as we can on more reviews, make sure you dive into our Forums to discuss and learn about more reviews and comments.

Carribean Basterds, running times and last-minute excitement

    May 20th, 2009 - 12am GMT, posted by Sebastian

Yes we wish we could be reporting live from the Croisette, but the world’s not a perfect place, and nothing’s ever honky dory. Instead, we’re giving you daily wrap-ups of the shit you just can’t miss, so that you’re able to stay on top of the Tarantinoverse in between your DVD watching, beer-drinking, Googling and all those other things people do to spend their time outside of work or school. Woah enough with the downbeat tone here, Inglourious Basterds will see the grace of a silver screen in only a few hours (”Nobody has seen Inglourious Basterds, because Quentin Tarantino watched the final print Wednesday night and then brought it to Cannes Friday.” Anne Thompson writes) ! We’re also hearing that there might be some improvements made after this screening (which is common practise, so chill out, chatter blogs of this internet!) in terms of length and sound. Daniel Bruehl was apparently shocked that he’s not really a Basterd (in the poster sense), but of course he wasn’t cut from the movie, the whole story made me laugh. But also, we hear that Enzo Castellari is going to outflank the Inglourious Basterds and send out his Carribean Basterds, isn’t that something. So stay tuned for tomorrow’s waterfall of first impressions, pictures and what have you. But…. let’s be absolutely clear about rule number one: Everybody be cool, YOU BE COOL!
